John Richard Archer was a remarkable figure who made history as the first black mayor in London. Born in Liverpool in 1863 to a Barbadian father and an Irish mother, Archer overcame significant barriers of racial prejudice to become a pioneering political leader.

In 1906, Archer was elected to the Battersea Borough Council, becoming one of the first people of African descent elected to public office in the UK. He championed progressive causes like women’s suffrage, fair wages, and equal rights. In 1913, his fellow councilors chose Archer to serve as Mayor of Battersea, making him the first black mayor of a London borough.

As Mayor, Archer fought tirelessly against social and racial injustice. He worked to improve housing conditions for Battersea’s working class and advocated for an end to racial discrimination. Archer’s groundbreaking achievements paved the way for greater diversity in British politics. He lived at 55 Brynmaer Road in Battersea during his later years until his death in 1932. The Borough of Wandsworth, which now encompasses Battersea, erected this blue plaque in 2013 to honor Archer’s legacy as a civil rights pioneer on the 100th anniversary of his election as Mayor.
