Henri Gaudier-Brzeska was a gifted French sculptor and artist who left an indelible mark on the art world in his tragically short life. Born in 1891 in Saint-Jean-de-Braye, France, Gaudier-Brzeska showed early promise and moved to London in 1911 to pursue his artistic passions. During his time in London, Gaudier-Brzeska lived and worked at 25 Winthorpe Road in Putney from 1913-1914. This period was one of incredible productivity and innovation for the young artist. He became a key figure in the Vorticist movement, an avant-garde art style that sought to capture the dynamism and energy of the modern world through bold lines, geometric shapes, and abstracted forms.

Gaudier-Brzeska’s sculptures, though small in number due to his untimely death, are considered masterpieces of the Vorticist aesthetic. Works like “Hieratic Head of Ezra Pound” and “Red Stone Dancer” showcase his unique ability to convey movement and vitality in stone and metal. Tragically, Gaudier-Brzeska’s promising career was cut short when he was killed in action during World War I at the age of just 23.
