Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ was a remarkable English poet, priest, and professor who left an indelible mark on the world of literature. In 1866, Hopkins made a life-altering decision to convert to Roman Catholicism, a choice that would shape his personal and professional path. He entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and was ordained as a priest in 1877. As a Jesuit, Hopkins dedicated himself to a life of service, teaching at various institutions, including Manresa House in Roehampton, where he lived and studied.

Despite his religious commitments, Hopkins never abandoned his love for poetry. He developed a unique style characterized by innovative rhythms, vivid imagery, and a deep spiritual intensity. His poems, such as “The Windhover” and “Pied Beauty,” celebrate the beauty of God’s creation and explore the complexities of faith and human experience.
