Edward Adrian Wilson was a renowned British polar explorer, ornithologist, natural historian, and physician best known for his role in the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), also known as the Terra Nova expedition, led by Robert Falcon Scott. Born in 1872, Wilson grew up in Cheltenham and studied natural sciences and medicine at Cambridge University. His passion for the natural world and exploration led him to join the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904), also led by Scott, where he served as assistant surgeon and zoologist.

During the Terra Nova expedition, Wilson was a key member of the party that reached the South Pole in January 1912, along with Scott, Lawrence Oates, Henry Bowers, and Edgar Evans. Tragically, all five men perished on the return journey due to extreme weather conditions, exhaustion, and a lack of supplies. Despite the terrible hardships they faced, Wilson continued his scientific work, making detailed observations and collecting specimens until the very end.

Wilson lived at this address, Battersea Vicarage, 42 Vicarage Crescent, prior to his fateful journey to Antarctica. The Borough of Wandsworth, where the plaque is located, has a rich history and has been home to many notable figures over the years. Today, it is a vibrant and diverse area of London, known for its green spaces, including Battersea Park and Wandsworth Common, as well as its thriving arts and culture scene.
