Dr. Thomas John Barnardo was a pioneering philanthropist who dedicated his life to helping destitute children in Victorian London. Born in Dublin in 1845, Barnardo moved to London to study medicine at the London Hospital. It was during this time that he became acutely aware of the plight of homeless children living on the city’s streets.

In 1866, Barnardo opened his first home for boys in a building on this very site in Stepney Causeway. This marked the beginning of his lifelong mission to provide shelter, education, and opportunities for children who had been abandoned or orphaned. Barnardo’s Homes, as they came to be known, rapidly expanded across London and beyond, offering a safe haven and a chance at a better life for thousands of young people.

Dr. Barnardo was a tireless advocate for child welfare reform. He campaigned against the exploitation of child labor and fought to improve living conditions for the poor. His work garnered widespread support, and by the time of his death in 1905, Barnardo’s Homes had cared for over 8,500 children. Today, the charity he founded continues to support vulnerable young people across the UK.

The borough of Tower Hamlets, where Dr. Barnardo began his vital work, has a long history of social activism and reform. It was here that many of London’s poorest residents lived and worked during the 19th century, often in appalling conditions.
