Known as the “Thames River Police” in its early days, this trailblazing unit was established to combat the rampant theft and pilferage that plagued the Port of London, one of the busiest ports in the world at the time.

Initially operating from a converted ship named the “Argus,” the Marine Police patrolled the River Thames and the various docks and wharves along its banks. Their presence and proactive approach to crime prevention proved highly effective, leading to a significant reduction in river crime and serving as a model for the formation of the Metropolitan Police in 1829.
