Captain James Cook was a renowned British explorer, navigator, cartographer and captain in the Royal Navy. Born in 1728 in Marton, Yorkshire, Cook is best known for his three voyages of exploration in the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.

Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years’ War and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec, which brought him to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society.

In 1768, Cook was appointed to command the scientific expedition of HMS Endeavour, which took him to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus, then on to New Zealand and the east coast of Australia, where he and his crew became the first recorded Europeans to make landfall. On his second and third voyages, Cook sailed far into Antarctic waters, discovered and named many Pacific islands, and disproved the existence of the fabled southern continent of Terra Australis.

Cook’s time in London was significant. Near this plaque’s location on Mile End Road, in the borough of Tower Hamlets, Cook occupied a house for some years. Tower Hamlets has a rich maritime history due to its proximity to the London docks. Many seafarers, including Cook, would have lived in this area between voyages. Sadly, Cook met an untimely death in Hawaii in 1779, during a confrontation with Hawaiians. Nonetheless, his extraordinary seamanship, surveying and cartographic skills, courage in exploring the unknown, and leadership abilities left a lasting legacy, significantly expanding European knowledge of the world.
