About This Blue Plaque

Jack “Kid” Berg, born in 1909 near Noble Court on Cable Street in Stepney, was a British boxing legend known as the “Whitechapel Windmill”. He grew up in the vibrant and diverse Borough of Tower Hamlets in London’s East End, an area with a rich boxing heritage that produced many champions.

Berg’s lightning-fast hands and relentless fighting style earned him his famous nickname. In 1930, he captured the World Junior Welterweight title, cementing his status as one of the best boxers of his era. Four years later, he added the British Lightweight Championship to his impressive list of accomplishments.

Throughout his career, Berg faced many of the top fighters of his time and thrilled crowds with his exciting performances in the ring. His battles with fellow British boxing great Kid Chocolate are still remembered as classics. After retiring from boxing, Berg remained a beloved figure in the East End community until his passing in 1991 at the age of 81. This blue plaque near his birthplace serves as a tribute to the “Whitechapel Windmill” who made Stepney proud.
