The Great Eastern (launched 1858) largest steamship of the century was built here by I.K. Brunel and J. Scott Russell
Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) was a renowned British civil engineer who left an indelible mark on the country’s infrastructure during the Industrial Revolution. Born into a family of engineers, Brunel’s innovative designs and ambitious projects revolutionized transportation and engineering in the 19th century.
Brunel’s most famous achievements include the design and construction of the Great Western Railway, linking London to Bristol, and the creation of steamships that transformed maritime travel. The plaque at Burrell’s Wharf in London’s Tower Hamlets borough commemorates one of his greatest feats: the construction of the SS Great Eastern, the largest steamship of its time. Launched in 1858, the Great Eastern was a marvel of engineering, measuring 692 feet in length and capable of carrying 4,000 passengers.
Brunel’s visionary work extended beyond the Great Eastern. He designed numerous bridges, tunnels, and dockyards throughout his career. The Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol and the Box Tunnel in Wiltshire stand as testaments to his engineering prowess. Brunel was also known for his friendship with fellow engineer John Scott Russell, with whom he collaborated on the Great Eastern project. His contribution to Britain’s infrastructure and his innovative spirit earned him great admiration during his lifetime and cemented his legacy as one of the most influential engineers in history.
