Dr. Innes Pearse was a pioneering British doctor who co-founded the groundbreaking Pioneer Health Centre in Peckham, London in 1926. Born in 1889, she studied medicine at the London School of Medicine for Women, qualifying as a doctor with an MBBS degree.

Together with her colleague Dr. George Scott Williamson, Dr. Pearse established the health center at 142 Queens Road with a visionary approach to preventative medicine and holistic wellbeing. The center sought to promote health through nutrition, exercise, education and social support within a purpose-built modernist building that included sports and leisure facilities.

The Pioneer Health Centre, affectionately known as “The Peckham Experiment”, became an influential model of social medicine, attracting international attention. It emphasized the importance of a healthy environment and lifestyle in preventing illness. Although the original center closed in 1950, its principles have had an enduring impact on public health and community-oriented approaches to healthcare.

Dr. Pearse dedicated her career to the center’s work and championing its progressive ideas. She remained actively involved until late in life, passing away in 1978 at the age of 89. This blue plaque, erected in 2009 in the London Borough of Southwark, commemorates her life’s work and the significance of the Pioneer Health Centre she co-created, which stood as a beacon of innovation in community health and wellness in the heart of Peckham.
