About This Blue Plaque

The Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) was the education authority responsible for schools and colleges in the 12 inner London boroughs from 1965 to 1990. Headquartered here at County Hall on the south bank of the River Thames in Lambeth, the ILEA oversaw education for over a million students at its peak.

Formed as part of the reorganization of local government in Greater London in 1965, the ILEA took over responsibilities previously held by the London County Council. It aimed to provide high-quality education and equal opportunities for students across inner London. The ILEA was known for its innovative and progressive educational policies.

During its 25-year existence, the ILEA faced challenges including population shifts, budget pressures, and political tensions. In 1990, the Authority was abolished by the Education Reform Act of 1988 and its powers were devolved to the individual London boroughs. Despite its relatively short lifespan, the ILEA left a significant legacy in London education through its commitment to comprehensive education, curricular innovation, and addressing the needs of a diverse student population.

County Hall, the former home of the ILEA, is located in the London borough of Lambeth on the historic south bank of the Thames. After the abolition of the Greater London Council in 1986, which had previously occupied the building, County Hall lay empty until the 1990s. It has now been repurposed and contains hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions. This blue plaque, erected the same year the GLC was abolished, commemorates the building’s long history as a center of London-wide government and education administration.
