Cobham’s flying career began during World War I when he joined the Royal Flying Corps. After the war, he gained fame for his record-breaking long-distance flights. In 1926, he completed a round-trip flight from England to Australia, covering an impressive 28,000 miles. This feat earned him a knighthood, making him Sir Alan Cobham at the age of just 32.

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Cobham continued to push the boundaries of aviation. He developed the technique of in-flight refueling, which greatly extended the range of aircraft. This innovation proved crucial during World War II. Cobham also played a key role in promoting aviation to the British public through his famous “Flying Circus” air displays, which toured the country and inspired a new generation of pilots.
