Margaret Elizabeth Noble, better known by her monastic name Sister Nivedita, was a remarkable Irish teacher, author, social activist and campaigner for Indian independence. Born in Ireland in 1867, she was greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, a key figure in the introduction of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.

In 1898, Noble moved to Calcutta, India where she dedicated herself to the education of Indian women and girls. She opened a girls’ school in Bagbazar area of Calcutta, which is still operating today. Sister Nivedita also worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Indian women, focusing on hygiene, health care and education.

As an ardent supporter of Indian independence, Sister Nivedita played a significant role in promoting the cause both within India and in the West. She developed a close association with Indian nationalists and was a prolific writer, authoring several books promoting Indian history, culture and philosophy to Western audiences. Her London home at 21A High Street, Wimbledon, where she lived from 1909-1911, became an important hub for the Indian independence movement in Britain.

Sadly, Sister Nivedita’s remarkable life was cut short when she passed away in Darjeeling in 1911 at the age of 44. However, her legacy as an educator, writer and campaigner for Indian independence continues to inspire. The erection of an English Heritage Blue Plaque at her former Wimbledon residence in 2017 serves as a fitting tribute to her outstanding contributions and ensures that her story can continue to be shared with future generations.
