Josephine Butler was a remarkable British social reformer and women’s rights activist who dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of women and campaigning against the sexual exploitation of vulnerable women and children. Born in 1828, she grew up in a progressive family that valued education and social justice. In 1852, she married George Butler, an academic and clergyman who supported her activism.

Butler is best known for her tireless efforts to repeal the Contagious Diseases Acts of the 1860s, which subjected women suspected of prostitution to invasive medical examinations and imprisonment. She argued that these laws were a violation of women’s civil liberties and sexual double standards, as they punished women but not their male clients. Despite fierce opposition, Butler’s campaign ultimately led to the repeal of the Acts in 1886.

In addition to her work on the Contagious Diseases Acts, Butler also advocated for women’s suffrage, better education and employment opportunities for women, and the abolition of child prostitution. She co-founded the International Abolitionist Federation to combat state-regulated prostitution internationally. From 1890 to 1893, Butler lived at 8 North View in Wimbledon Common, which is commemorated by this blue plaque erected in 2001. Her legacy as a tireless champion of social justice and women’s rights continues to inspire activists around the world today.
