Joseph Toynbee (1815-1866) was a renowned British aural surgeon who made significant contributions to the field of otology. Born in Lincolnshire, he studied medicine in London and became a pioneer in the treatment of ear diseases. Toynbee is credited with establishing otology as a distinct medical specialty and founding the first ear hospital in the United Kingdom.

Toynbee lived at Beech Holme, 49 Wimbledon Parkside, from 1854 to 1866 with his family, including his son Arnold Toynbee, who would later become a prominent social philosopher. During his time here, Joseph Toynbee conducted groundbreaking research on the anatomy and pathology of the ear, publishing his findings in several influential works, such as “A Descriptive Catalogue of Preparations Illustrative of the Diseases of the Ear” (1857).

In addition to his medical achievements, Toynbee was also a dedicated philanthropist. He provided free treatment to the poor and worked tirelessly to improve public health in London. His legacy lives on through the Toynbee Hall, a social reform institution founded by his son Arnold in the East End of London, which continues to serve the community to this day.

The Borough of Merton, where the Toynbee family resided, has a rich history dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086. It is known for its beautiful green spaces, including Wimbledon Common and Mitcham Common, as well as its sporting heritage, being home to the world-famous Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
