About This Blue Plaque

Arthur Schopenhauer was a renowned German philosopher who made significant contributions to metaphysics, aesthetics, ethics, and psychology. Born in 1788 in Danzig (now GdaƄsk, Poland), Schopenhauer spent a brief period living and studying in Wimbledon, London, in 1803 at the age of 15. This formative experience exposed him to new ideas and influences that would shape his later philosophical work.

Schopenhauer is best known for his 1818 work “The World as Will and Representation,” in which he argued that the fundamental reality of the universe is an irrational, blind, and striving “will.” This pessimistic view of existence stood in contrast to the prevailing Enlightenment-era belief in reason and progress. Despite initial obscurity, Schopenhauer’s ideas would later influence thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Albert Einstein.

The plaque commemorating Schopenhauer’s brief residency in Wimbledon was erected in 2005 at Eagle House on the High Street. This historic building, dating back to the 18th century, is a testament to the rich history of the London Borough of Merton. Though Schopenhauer’s time here was short, it is a reminder of the enduring impact of his philosophical legacy and the role that London has played in shaping the minds of great thinkers throughout history.
