Sir Francis Pettit Smith (1808-1874) was an English inventor and engineer who made significant contributions to marine propulsion. He is best known for his pioneering work on the screw propeller, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized maritime transportation in the 19th century.

Born in Hythe, Kent, Smith began his career as a farmer before turning his attention to engineering. In 1836, he patented a new design for a screw propeller, which proved to be more efficient than the paddle wheels commonly used at the time. His innovative design allowed ships to navigate shallow waters and improved their maneuverability, speed, and fuel efficiency.

Smith’s invention was initially met with skepticism from the Admiralty, but he persevered and continued to refine his design. In 1839, he successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of his screw propeller on a small boat, the SS Archimedes, which became the world’s first successful screw-propelled steamship. This achievement earned him widespread recognition and led to the gradual adoption of screw propellers in the Royal Navy and merchant ships worldwide.

For his groundbreaking work, Smith was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1871, becoming Sir Francis Pettit Smith. He spent the later years of his life residing at 17 Sydenham Hill in the Borough of Lewisham, London, where he lived from 1864 until his death in 1874. The blue plaque commemorating his life and achievements was erected at this address in 2008, serving as a reminder of his lasting impact on marine engineering and transportation.
