About This Blue Plaque

Eleanor Marx was a trailblazing socialist campaigner and the youngest daughter of famed philosopher and economist Karl Marx. Born in 1855 to Karl Marx and Jenny von Westphalen, Eleanor grew up in a household steeped in progressive ideas and activism. She followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming a prominent figure in the British labor movement.

Known to her family as “Tussy”, Eleanor was a gifted writer and orator who fought passionately for workers’ rights, women’s equality, and social justice. She played a key role in the 1889 London Dock Strike and helped organize the Gasworkers’ Union. Eleanor was multilingual and worked tirelessly to make her father’s writings accessible to working class audiences, translating many of his works into English.

Tragically, Eleanor died by suicide in 1898 at the age of 43, at her home located at 7 Jews Walk in Sydenham. This blue plaque marks the place where she spent her final years. Eleanor lived in Sydenham with her partner Edward Aveling, a controversial figure who many hold at least partially responsible for her untimely death.

The Borough of Lewisham, where Sydenham is located, has a rich history of social activism and progressive politics that continues to this day. Eleanor Marx’s legacy as a pioneering feminist and champion of the working class remains an inspiration to many. This plaque, installed in 2008, serves as a permanent tribute to her life and work in advancing the socialist cause.
