Henry Havelock Ellis was a groundbreaking British physician, psychologist, and writer who played a pivotal role in the scientific study of human sexuality. Born in 1859, Ellis grew up in a time when discussing sex was largely taboo. Despite societal constraints, he dedicated his life to understanding and destigmatizing this fundamental aspect of human nature.

Ellis’s most notable work, the seven-volume “Studies in the Psychology of Sex,” was published between 1897 and 1928. This comprehensive series explored various aspects of sexuality, including sexual orientation, masturbation, and the physiology of sexual behavior. His research challenged prevailing attitudes and laid the foundation for a more open and informed discourse about sex.

In addition to his scientific work, Ellis was a prominent social reformer. He advocated for women’s rights, campaigned for the decriminalization of homosexuality, and supported the use of contraception. His progressive views often put him at odds with the conservative Victorian society in which he lived.

From 1916 until his death in 1939, Ellis resided at 14 Dover Mansions on Canterbury Crescent in the London Borough of Lambeth. This area, situated just south of the River Thames, has a rich history and has been home to many notable figures over the years. Today, a blue plaque erected in 1981 commemorates Ellis’s life and work at this address, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire and inform new generations.
