Graham Greene was a renowned English novelist, playwright, and film critic who left an indelible mark on 20th-century literature. Born in 1904 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, Greene was the son of Charles Henry Greene, a headmaster, and Marion Raymond Greene. He attended Balliol College, Oxford, where he published his first book, a volume of poetry, in 1925.

Greene’s literary career spanned over six decades, during which he penned numerous novels, short stories, and essays. His works often explored themes of moral ambiguity, religious faith, and political intrigue, set against exotic backdrops around the world. Some of his most famous novels include “The Power and the Glory” (1940), “The Heart of the Matter” (1948), and “The Quiet American” (1955). Many of his works were adapted into successful films, such as “Brighton Rock” (1947) and “The Third Man” (1949), for which he also wrote the screenplay.

From 1935 to 1940, Graham Greene resided at 14 Clapham Common North Side in the Borough of Lambeth, London. This period was particularly significant for Greene, as it was during this time that he published some of his most influential works, including “Brighton Rock” and “The Power and the Glory.” The latter novel, set during the religious persecution in Mexico during the 1930s, is often considered his masterpiece and solidified his reputation as a major literary figure.

Throughout his career, Greene received numerous accolades for his contributions to literature. In 1966, he was appointed a Companion of Honour, and in 1986, he was awarded the prestigious Order of Merit. Graham Greene passed away in 1991 at the age of 86, leaving behind a rich literary legacy that continues to inspire and captivate readers around the world. The blue plaque at his former Clapham residence, erected in 2011, serves as a testament to his enduring impact on English literature.
