C. L. R. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, James moved to England in 1932, where he became a leading figure in the Pan-African movement and the struggle for decolonization.

James is best known for his seminal work, “The Black Jacobins” (1938), a groundbreaking study of the Haitian Revolution that highlighted the role of enslaved Africans in their own liberation. His other notable works include “Beyond a Boundary” (1963), a memoir exploring the cultural and political significance of cricket in the West Indies, and “World Revolution” (1937), an analysis of the rise of Stalinism.

Throughout his life, James was deeply committed to the cause of anti-colonial struggle and the fight against racism. He was a key figure in the International African Service Bureau and the Pan-African Federation, and played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and political discourse around decolonization and black liberation.

James lived and died at 165 Railton Road in Brixton, a vibrant and diverse neighborhood in the London Borough of Lambeth. Brixton has a rich history of Caribbean migration and has been a hub of black British culture and activism since the mid-20th century. The area’s Afro-Caribbean community has played a vital role in shaping its identity and character, making it a fitting place for James to have called home in his later years.
