Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, was one of Britain’s most celebrated military commanders of the 20th century. Born in 1887 at Oval House, 52-54 Kennington Oval in London’s Borough of Lambeth, Montgomery, affectionately known as “Monty,” would go on to play a pivotal role in World War II.

Montgomery’s military career began in 1908 when he was commissioned into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He served with distinction in World War I, where he was seriously wounded during the First Battle of Ypres in 1914. Between the wars, he held various posts, including instructor at the Staff College in Camberley and commanding the 9th Infantry Brigade.

It was during World War II that Montgomery truly made his mark. He commanded the Eighth Army in North Africa, leading them to a decisive victory over Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps at the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942 – a turning point in the war. Later, he played a key role in the invasion of Sicily and the Allied invasion of Normandy. Post-war, Montgomery became NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe until his retirement in 1958.

Throughout his career, Montgomery was known for his meticulous planning, tactical brilliance, and his ability to inspire troops. His leadership and contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, and being made Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.

The blue plaque at his birthplace in Kennington Oval stands as a testament to the extraordinary life and achievements of one of Britain’s greatest military leaders. It’s a reminder of the significant figures who have called the Borough of Lambeth home over the years.
