Angela Carter was a prolific and inventive British author known for her darkly imaginative, sensual, and feminist works. Born Angela Olive Stalker in 1940 in Eastbourne, England, Carter began writing at an early age. She studied English literature at the University of Bristol, where she developed a passion for folklore, fairy tales, and the Gothic tradition that would later infuse her fiction.

Carter’s novels, short stories, and essays often subverted traditional narratives, blending elements of magical realism, science fiction, and Gothic horror. Her most celebrated works include the story collections “The Bloody Chamber” (1979), which offered bold reinterpretations of classic fairy tales, and “Nights at the Circus” (1984), a surreal novel following the adventures of a circus performer. Carter’s writing fearlessly explored themes of gender, sexuality, and power, earning her recognition as a major voice in contemporary literature.

From 1976 until her untimely death from lung cancer in 1992, Carter resided at 107 The Chase in the Clapham area of Lambeth, London. This blue plaque, erected in 2019, marks the home where she spent her final years and produced some of her most groundbreaking work. Carter’s legacy continues to inspire and influence writers and readers worldwide, cementing her status as one of the most distinctive and imaginative voices of the 20th century.
