William Makepeace Thackeray was one of the most influential English novelists of the 19th century. Born in Calcutta, India in 1811, Thackeray moved to England as a child and grew up in London. He studied at the prestigious Charterhouse School and later attended Trinity College, Cambridge, though he left without a degree.

Thackeray began his literary career as a journalist and satirist, writing for various publications under pen names. His breakthrough came with the publication of “Vanity Fair” in 1847-48, a satirical novel that skewered the upper classes of English society. The book was an instant success and established Thackeray as a major literary figure.

Throughout his career, Thackeray wrote several other notable works, including “Pendennis,” “The History of Henry Esmond,” and “The Newcomes.” His novels were known for their wit, social commentary, and complex characters. Thackeray lived at 2 Palace Green in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, a fashionable area of London that was home to many artists and writers. He died here in 1863 at the age of 52, leaving behind a legacy as one of the great Victorian novelists.

Today, Thackeray is remembered as a master of social satire and a keen observer of human nature. His works continue to be widely read and admired for their insight, humor, and enduring relevance.
