Wells Coates was a groundbreaking British-Canadian architect and designer who made significant contributions to the modernist movement in the early to mid-20th century. Born in Japan to Canadian missionary parents in 1895, Coates studied architecture at the University of British Columbia before moving to London in the 1920s to pursue his career.

Coates quickly established himself as a leading figure in the British modern movement, known for his innovative designs that embraced new materials and technologies. He was a founding member of the Modern Architectural Research Group (MARS) and played a key role in introducing the International Style to Britain. Some of his most notable works include the Lawn Road Flats in Hampstead, the Embassy Court apartment block in Brighton, and the Isokon furniture range.

From 1936 to 1956, Coates resided at 18 Yeoman’s Row in the fashionable Knightsbridge area of London, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This borough has long been associated with the arts, culture, and high society, making it a fitting place for an influential architect like Coates to call home. During his time here, he continued to push the boundaries of modernist design and cement his legacy as one of the most important architects of his generation.

Sadly, Wells Coates passed away in 1958 at the age of 62, but his impact on the world of architecture and design endures to this day. This blue plaque, erected in 2014, serves as a tribute to his life and work, ensuring that his contributions will be remembered by generations to come.
