Walter Greaves (1846-1930) was a British artist best known for his close association with the American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Born in Chelsea, London, Greaves spent most of his life in the borough, living at 104 Cheyne Walk from 1855 to 1897. This historic street along the River Thames was home to many famous artists and writers during the late 19th century.

Greaves and his brother Henry began as studio assistants to Whistler in the 1860s, helping him with his paintings and etchings. Under Whistler’s influence, Walter developed his own distinctive style, focusing on scenes of the River Thames and the people who lived and worked along its banks. His paintings capture the atmosphere of Victorian London with great sensitivity and attention to detail.

Despite his talent, Greaves struggled for recognition during his lifetime. It was only in the early 20th century that his work began to attract attention, thanks in part to the efforts of his friend and patron William Marchant. Today, Greaves’ paintings can be found in major collections such as the Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
