Sir W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) was a renowned English dramatist, librettist, poet and illustrator, best known for his collaborations with composer Arthur Sullivan. Together they created 14 comic operas between 1871 and 1896, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado, which are still widely performed and admired today.

Born in London, Gilbert began his creative career as a civil servant, but soon transitioned to writing, starting with journalism, short stories and poems. His early plays earned recognition, but it was the partnership with Sullivan that propelled both men to lasting fame. Gilbert’s clever wordplay, biting satire, and memorable characters perfectly complemented Sullivan’s musical genius.

Gilbert lived at 39 Harrington Gardens in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea from 1890 until his death in 1911 at the age of 74. The fashionable Kensington neighborhood was home to many prominent figures in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. A man of diverse talents, Gilbert was also a prolific painter, illustrator and director, involved with the staging of his own works. He was knighted by Edward VII in 1907. Today, he is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the history of musical theater.
