Thomas Daniell (1749-1840) was a renowned English landscape and topographical artist, best known for his stunning paintings and engravings depicting scenes from India and the Orient. Born in Kingston upon Thames, Daniell developed a passion for art at a young age and honed his skills under the tutelage of his uncle, William Daniell.

In 1784, Thomas Daniell embarked on a groundbreaking journey to India with his nephew William, where they spent several years meticulously documenting the country’s landscapes, architecture, and people. Their travels took them from Calcutta to Kashmir, capturing the essence of the subcontinent through their art. The duo’s works, published as the acclaimed “Oriental Scenery” series, introduced the British public to the wonders of India and helped shape the Western perception of the East.

Upon returning to England in 1794, Thomas Daniell continued to create captivating works based on his Indian sketches and memories. He settled in the fashionable Kensington area of London, where he lived and worked at 14 Earls Terrace. The Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, known for its elegant architecture and cultural heritage, provided an inspiring environment for the artist.
