Seraphine Astafieva was a renowned Russian ballet dancer and teacher who made London her home in the early 20th century. Born into nobility in 1876, she held the title of Princess but dedicated her life to the art of dance. In the 1910s, Astafieva settled at 152 King’s Road in Chelsea, an area that attracted many artists, writers and performers. Here she lived and operated a ballet studio, passing on her knowledge and passion to aspiring dancers. Many of her students went on to have successful careers in ballet and modern dance.
