Colonel Rookes Evelyn Bell Crompton (1845-1940) was a pioneering British electrical engineer and inventor who made significant contributions to the development of electrical power systems and electric vehicles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Crompton lived and worked at this location in Kensington Court from 1891 until his death in 1940.

Crompton’s early career included military service in the Royal Artillery, where he rose to the rank of Colonel. He later turned his attention to electrical engineering, founding the Crompton & Co. electrical equipment manufacturing company in 1878. The firm played a key role in the electrification of Britain, producing dynamos, lamps, and other essential components for the growing electrical industry.

Among Crompton’s notable achievements was his work on the development of electric traction systems for tramways and railways. He was a strong advocate for the adoption of electric vehicles and designed several early electric cars, including a battery-powered vehicle that competed in the 1899 Paris-Bordeaux race. Crompton also made important contributions to the standardization of electrical units and was a founding member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (now the IET).

The Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where Crompton resided for nearly five decades, has long been associated with innovation and the arts.
