P.L. Travers (1899-1996) was an Australian-born British novelist and journalist, best known as the author of the beloved Mary Poppins children’s book series. Born Helen Lyndon Goff in Queensland, Australia, she later adopted the pen name “P.L. Travers” and moved to England in 1924 to pursue her writing career.

Travers published the first Mary Poppins book in 1934, introducing the world to the magical nanny who arrives on the East Wind to care for the Banks children. The book was an immediate success and spawned a series of sequels. Mary Poppins combined fantasy and whimsy with gentle life lessons, captivating young readers worldwide. Travers drew inspiration from her own childhood and her deep fascination with mysticism and folklore.

For over 15 years, from 1946 to 1962, Travers lived and worked at 50 Smith Street in the fashionable Chelsea neighborhood of London. It was during this period that she wrote several of the Mary Poppins sequels. The charming townhouse, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, provided a tranquil haven for Travers’ creative pursuits. In 2018, English Heritage honored her legacy by installing a blue plaque at her former residence, celebrating her significant contributions to children’s literature.

While Travers was protective of her creation and initially resistant to Walt Disney’s plans for a Mary Poppins film adaptation, the 1964 movie starring Julie Andrews became a cinematic classic. Travers continued writing throughout her life, exploring various genres and themes. Her enduring legacy as the creator of Mary Poppins has brought joy and enchantment to generations of children and adults alike.
