Dame Maud McCarthy was a pioneering British nurse who made significant contributions to the field of military nursing. Born in 1858 in Sydney, Australia, McCarthy began her nursing career in London in the late 1880s. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Sister at the London Hospital in 1891 and later serving as Matron at the Royal Herbert Hospital in Woolwich.

During the Second Boer War (1899-1902), McCarthy served as Superintendent of the Army Nursing Service, overseeing the deployment of nurses to South Africa. Her exceptional leadership and organizational skills earned her the Royal Red Cross in 1902. In 1914, at the outbreak of World War I, McCarthy was appointed Matron-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force in France, making her the first woman to hold this position.

As Matron-in-Chief, McCarthy was responsible for the welfare and efficiency of nurses serving in field hospitals and casualty clearing stations near the front lines. She worked tirelessly to improve the conditions for wounded soldiers and ensure that her nurses had the resources and support they needed to provide the best possible care. In recognition of her outstanding service, McCarthy was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 1918, becoming the first nurse to receive this honor. After the war, she retired to this residence at 47 Markham Square in Chelsea, where she lived until her death in 1949 at the age of 90.
