Dame Marie Rambert was a pioneering figure in British ballet, renowned for founding Ballet Rambert, one of the most influential dance companies in the UK. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1888, Rambert’s passion for dance led her to study with the legendary Serge Diaghilev and perform with the Ballets Russes in Paris.

In 1926, Rambert settled in London and established her own ballet school and company, initially named the Ballet Club. Her innovative approach to choreography and training helped shape the future of British dance. Rambert’s vision was to create a uniquely English style of ballet, drawing from a wide range of influences including classical, modern, and folk dance traditions.

Throughout her long career, Rambert nurtured the talents of many celebrated dancers and choreographers, including Frederick Ashton and Antony Tudor. Her company, later renamed Ballet Rambert, became known for its diverse repertoire and fearless experimentation. Recognized for her immense contributions to dance, Rambert was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1962. She continued to oversee the company’s operations until her death in 1982 at the age of 94.

Dame Marie Rambert resided at 19 Campden Hill Gardens in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, an area known for its rich cultural heritage and prestigious residents. The blue plaque commemorating her life and achievements was installed here in 1997, ensuring that her legacy as a trailblazer in British ballet will continue to inspire future generations of dancers and dance enthusiasts.
