Born Joyce Irene Phipps in London, she began her career in the 1930s as a stage actress and soon gained popularity for her comedic talent.

Throughout her career, Grenfell showcased her versatility as a performer. She appeared in numerous films, including the St. Trinian’s series (1954-1966) where she portrayed the memorable character of Policewoman Ruby Gates. On television, she starred in her own series, “Joyce Grenfell Requests the Pleasure” (1964), which featured her signature monologues and sketches.

As a writer, Grenfell penned several books, including her autobiography “Joyce Grenfell Requests the Pleasure” (1976) and a collection of her famous monologues titled “Turn Back the Clock” (1981). Her clever wordplay and observational humor endeared her to audiences across Britain.
