John Stuart Mill was one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. Born in 1806, he was the son of the Scottish philosopher and historian James Mill. From a young age, Mill was immersed in intellectual pursuits. He was educated at home by his father, learning Greek at age 3 and Latin at 8. By his teenage years, Mill was already a formidable scholar well-versed in logic, political economy, and the classical works.

Mill went on to make significant contributions across philosophy, politics, and economics. His most famous work, “On Liberty” published in 1859, passionately argued for individual rights and freedom of expression. Mill was also an early advocate of women’s suffrage. In his book “The Subjection of Women”, he asserted the equality of the sexes and critiqued the patriarchal society of Victorian England.

For many years, Mill resided here on Kensington Square in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This fashionable area of West London has long attracted notable artists, writers and thinkers. Mill would have been neighbors with the likes of poet T.S. Eliot and writer William Makepeace Thackeray, who penned “Vanity Fair” while living on nearby Young Street.

Mill’s extraordinary intellect left a profound impact on modern thought. His writings on utilitarianism helped define the moral philosophy. As an economist, his “Principles of Political Economy” was one of the most widely read works of the time. Mill also served as a Member of Parliament toward the end of his life, continuing to champion liberal reforms. He passed away in 1873 in Avignon, France. However, his legacy as one of Britain’s greatest minds endures to this day.
