Hablot Knight Browne, better known by his pen name “Phiz”, was a renowned British illustrator who brought to life the memorable characters of Charles Dickens’s novels. Born in 1815, Browne showed artistic talent from a young age and eventually became one of the most sought-after illustrators of his time.

Browne’s collaboration with Dickens began in 1836 when he was chosen to illustrate “The Pickwick Papers”. His whimsical and expressive style perfectly captured the essence of Dickens’s stories, and the two formed a long-lasting partnership. Browne went on to illustrate ten of Dickens’s major novels, including “David Copperfield”, “Bleak House”, and “A Tale of Two Cities”.

In addition to his work with Dickens, Browne also illustrated numerous other books and periodicals throughout his career. His distinctive style, characterized by lively characters and intricate detail, made him one of the most influential illustrators of the Victorian era.

From 1874 to 1880, Browne resided at 239 Ladbroke Grove in the fashionable borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This elegant area of London, known for its grand Georgian and Victorian terraces, has been home to many notable figures over the years. The blue plaque commemorating Browne’s time at this address was erected in 2001, ensuring that his legacy as a vital contributor to English literature and art endures.
