About This Blue Plaque

George Orwell (1903-1950) was a renowned English novelist, essayist, and critic best known for his powerful novels “Animal Farm” and “Nineteen Eighty-Four”. Born Eric Arthur Blair in India, Orwell later adopted his famous pen name while embarking on his writing career. He attended Eton College before serving as a colonial police officer in Burma, an experience that profoundly shaped his views on imperialism and totalitarianism.

Upon returning to England, Orwell committed himself to writing and exploring social issues. He lived in various parts of London, including a flat at 10a Mortimer Crescent in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea from 1942 to 1944. It was during this period that he worked as a war correspondent for the BBC and began writing his seminal novel “Animal Farm”, an allegorical critique of Stalinism and the Russian Revolution.

Orwell’s experiences in the Spanish Civil War and his opposition to totalitarianism deeply influenced his writing. His dystopian masterpiece “Nineteen Eighty-Four”, published in 1949, depicted a bleak future of mass surveillance, thought control, and the manipulation of truth. The novel introduced terms like “Big Brother” and “doublethink” into the English language and remains a powerful warning against the dangers of authoritarianism. Sadly, Orwell died of tuberculosis in 1950 at the age of 46, leaving behind a legacy as one of the 20th century’s most important and prescient writers. In 2012, an English Heritage Blue Plaque was erected at Kington House on Mortimer Crescent to commemorate Orwell’s time living and writing at this location in the heart of London.
