Ford Madox Ford was a prominent English novelist, poet, critic and editor who made significant contributions to modernist literature in the early 20th century. Born Ford Hermann Hueffer in 1873, he adopted the name Ford Madox Ford in 1919. He is best remembered for his novel “The Good Soldier” (1915), often considered one of the greatest novels of the 20th century.

Ford was born in Merton, Surrey but spent much of his life in London. From 1919 to 1927, he lived at 80 Campden Hill Road in the affluent Kensington and Chelsea borough, known for its rich literary history. Many famous writers have called this area home over the years. It was here that Ford wrote some of his most notable works, including the Parade’s End tetralogy (1924-1928).

In addition to his own writing, Ford played a crucial role in shaping modern literature through his encouragement and promotion of fellow writers. He founded influential literary journals like The English Review and The Transatlantic Review, which published works by iconic writers such as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and Gertrude Stein. Ford’s keen editorial eye helped launch the careers of many literary giants.

Ford’s literary legacy extends beyond just his novels and editorial work. He was a masterful prose stylist whose narrative techniques, such as the “time-shift” and unreliable narrator, inspired countless later modernist and postmodern writers. His 1939 obituary in The Times praised him as a “patient and sensitive teacher” who “exerted an immense influence on the younger novelists of his day.” The plaque at his former Campden Hill residence, erected in 1973, pays tribute to an author and critic who left an indelible mark on English letters.
