In 1889, Sandow moved to London, where he quickly gained fame for his strength demonstrations and “muscle displays.” He opened his own gym, the Institute of Physical Culture, at 161 Holland Park Avenue in the affluent Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This location became a hub for those interested in health and fitness, attracting notable figures of the time.

Sandow’s influence extended far beyond his personal training. He organized the world’s first major bodybuilding competition, “The Great Competition,” in 1901 at London’s Royal Albert Hall. This event is considered the precursor to modern bodybuilding contests. Sandow also authored several books on physical culture and designed exercise equipment that laid the foundation for the modern fitness industry.
