Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) was an influential American-born artist and graphic designer who made his mark in London during the early 20th century. Renowned for his bold, modernist style, Kauffer played a significant role in shaping the visual landscape of British advertising and design.

Kauffer initially traveled to Europe to pursue a career as a painter. However, he found his true calling in the world of commercial art, creating striking posters for clients such as London Underground and Shell. His innovative designs often incorporated elements of Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism, setting him apart from his contemporaries.

Throughout his career, Kauffer collaborated with many notable figures, including the poet T.S. Eliot and the artist Mark Gertler. He also taught at the Royal College of Art, inspiring a new generation of designers. Kauffer lived in flats 139/141 of Swan Court on Chelsea Manor Street with his partner, the textile designer Marion Dorn (1896-1964). The Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where they resided, has long been a hub for artists and creatives, with its vibrant cultural scene and proximity to major museums and galleries.
