Sir Edward Burne-Jones was a renowned British artist who made significant contributions to the Pre-Raphaelite movement and the Aesthetic Movement in the late 19th century. Born in Birmingham in 1833, Burne-Jones studied at Exeter College, Oxford, where he met William Morris, who would become a lifelong friend and collaborator.

Burne-Jones was a prolific painter, known for his stunning, dreamlike works that often depicted scenes from mythology, legends, and literary sources. His distinctive style, characterized by elongated figures, intricate detailing, and rich colors, captivated audiences and earned him widespread acclaim. Some of his most famous works include “The Golden Stairs” (1880), “King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid” (1884), and the “Briar Rose” series (1885-1890).

In addition to his successful career as an artist, Burne-Jones held several prestigious positions. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1885 and was created a Baronet in 1894, becoming Sir Edward Burne-Jones. He also served as the President of the Birmingham Society of Artists and was a member of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium.

From 1865 to 1867, Burne-Jones resided at 41 Kensington Square in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London. This affluent area has been home to many notable figures throughout history, including artists, writers, and intellectuals. The Blue Plaque commemorating Burne-Jones’s time at this address was erected in 1998, a century after his death in 1898, serving as a testament to his enduring legacy and the impact he made on British art.
