Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867) was an renowned Italian-born sculptor who achieved great success and recognition in England during the Victorian era. Marochetti was born in Turin, Italy into an aristocratic family, inheriting the title of Baron. He studied sculpture in France and first came to prominence with his equestrian statue of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy in Turin in 1838.

In 1848, Marochetti moved to London, quickly establishing himself as a leading sculptor in the city. He became a favorite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, receiving numerous royal commissions. Among his most famous works are the equestrian statues of Richard the Lionheart at the Palace of Westminster and that of Queen Victoria in Glasgow.

From 1851 until his death in 1867, Marochetti resided at 34 Onslow Square in the fashionable district of South Kensington. During this period, Onslow Square was home to many prominent figures in the arts and sciences. Marochetti’s studio was located behind the house, where he created many of his celebrated sculptures. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Marochetti was elected a Royal Academician in 1866.

Today, Onslow Square falls within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, an affluent area known for its stunning architecture, museums, and cultural attractions. The borough has long been associated with the arts and is home to institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal College of Art, and the Design Museum. This blue plaque, erected in 2010, serves as a reminder of the significant role Carlo Marochetti played in shaping the artistic landscape of Victorian London.
