About This Blue Plaque

Sir Archibald McIndoe (1900-1960) was a pioneering British plastic surgeon who made groundbreaking advances in reconstructive surgery, particularly for burned airmen during World War II. Born in New Zealand, McIndoe studied medicine at the University of Otago before moving to London to pursue his career. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1932.

During the war, McIndoe established a special unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, Sussex, dedicated to treating badly burned Allied airmen. His innovative techniques in plastic surgery restored both function and appearance for the injured pilots, giving them newfound hope. McIndoe also recognized the importance of emotional support and rehabilitation, encouraging his patients, dubbed the “Guinea Pig Club,” to socialize and support each other through their recovery.

For his transformative work, McIndoe was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1944 and knighted in 1947. After the war, he continued his reconstructive surgery practice, including here at his residence in flat 14 of Avenue Court on Draycott Avenue in London’s prestigious Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
