Andrew Bonar Law 1858-1923 Prime Minister lived here
Andrew Bonar Law served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1922 to 1923. During his brief tenure, he focused on rebuilding the nation after World War I. Law is best known as the only British prime minister born outside the British Isles, having been born in New Brunswick, Canada.
After a successful business career, Law entered politics as a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1900. He held several prominent positions including Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal. Law’s rise to power came after the downfall of Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s coalition government in 1922.
This blue plaque marks 24 Onslow Gardens in London’s affluent Kensington and Chelsea borough, where Law resided. The area has been home to many notable figures over the years. Neighboring Onslow Square was once home to a young Winston Churchill in the late 1800s.
Though Law’s time as prime minister was short, he played an important role in stabilizing Britain in the early 1920s as the country recovered from the aftermath of World War I. Tragically, Law was diagnosed with throat cancer shortly into his premiership and resigned in May 1923. He passed away later that year at the age of 65.
