Albert Chevalier (1861-1923) was a renowned English music hall comedian, actor and singer, born at 17 St Anns Villas in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London. Chevalier began his career at a young age, performing in small music halls in London’s East End. He quickly gained a reputation for his witty comedic acts, clever songs, and ability to connect with audiences. His most famous character was a Cockney costermonger (street seller) named “‘Arry”, which he portrayed with a thick accent and colorful slang. Songs like “My Old Dutch” and “Wot Cher!” became immensely popular.

As his fame grew, Chevalier began performing in London’s prestigious West End theaters and even took his act to America, enjoying success on both sides of the Atlantic. He was known for his versatility, able to switch between comedic and serious roles with ease.
