Louis MacNeice was an accomplished Irish poet and playwright who played a significant role in the literary world of the mid-20th century. Born Frederick Louis MacNeice in 1907 in Belfast, he was known for his insightful and evocative writing that often explored themes of identity, politics, and the human condition.

MacNeice studied at Oxford, where he became friends with fellow poets W.H. Auden and Stephen Spender. Together, they formed a key part of the influential “Auden Group” in the 1930s. MacNeice published several acclaimed poetry collections over his career, including “Poems” (1935), “Autumn Journal” (1939), and “The Burning Perch” (1963).

In addition to his poetic works, MacNeice was a prolific writer for radio. He worked for the BBC from 1941, producing and writing many radio plays and features. MacNeice lived at 52 Canonbury Park South in Islington, London from 1947 to 1952, during a productive period of his life and career. Islington has long been a vibrant, creative borough that many artists and writers have called home.

Sadly, MacNeice died from pneumonia in 1963 at the age of 55. However, his literary legacy lives on. He is remembered as one of the most important Irish poets of his generation, known for his mastery of language, inventive use of form, and thought-provoking explorations of modern life and the human experience. This blue plaque, installed in 1996, proudly commemorates MacNeice’s life and the time he spent living and working in Islington.
