John Wesley was a prominent 18th-century Anglican cleric and theologian, best known as a leader of the Methodist movement. Born in 1703 in Epworth, Lincolnshire, Wesley was the fifteenth child of Samuel Wesley, an Anglican rector, and his wife Susanna. He received his education at Charterhouse and Christ Church, Oxford, where he earned his Master of Arts degree.

In 1729, Wesley and his brother Charles founded the “Holy Club” at Oxford, which focused on methodical study and devotion. This group laid the foundation for the Methodist movement, which emphasized personal faith, evangelism, and social justice. Wesley’s teachings challenged the established church and sparked a spiritual revival that swept across Britain and its colonies.

Throughout his life, Wesley traveled extensively, preaching outdoors and in churches, and organizing Methodist societies. He is estimated to have preached over 40,000 sermons and traveled 250,000 miles on horseback, spreading his message of faith and social reform. Wesley’s influence extended beyond religion, as he also advocated for the abolition of slavery, prison reform, and the education of the poor.

In his later years, Wesley resided at 47 City Road in the Borough of Islington, London, which became known as Wesley’s Chapel. The site served as his home, a meeting place for the Methodist movement, and a center for social outreach. Today, the chapel stands as a testament to Wesley’s enduring legacy and the impact of the Methodist movement on British society and beyond.
