Clement Attlee was a British Labour politician who served as Prime Minister…
This late-Georgian building was called Equestrian Villa, later Belle Vue House. Charles Turner, operator of the coach to London, and sometime proprietor of The Queens Head, lived here from 1822 to 1832. His son-in-law, George Stanborough, coachdriver, lived here until 1863.
Charles Turner was a prominent figure in 19th century Pinner, known for operating the coach service to London from 1822 to 1832. He resided at what was then called Equestrian Villa (later renamed Belle Vue House) during this period, leaving his mark on the local transportation industry.
As the coach operator, Turner played a vital role in connecting Pinner to the bustling city of London. His service would have been essential for local residents, merchants, and travelers alike in an era before railways dominated transportation. Running a reliable coach service required significant organizational skills, business acumen, and knowledge of horses and vehicles.
Turner was also involved in the local community as the proprietor of The Queens Head, a well-known establishment in Pinner. After his tenure, the coach operations and residence at 64 High Street were taken over by his son-in-law, George Stanborough, until 1863, showing the family’s continued involvement in the coaching trade.
The handsome late-Georgian building that Turner and Stanborough called home still stands today in the heart of Pinner, now part of the London Borough of Harrow. Its elegant architecture reflects the prosperity and style of the coaching era. Take a moment to imagine the clatter of horses’ hooves and the bustle of passengers as Turner’s coach set off for London from this very spot nearly 200 years ago – a slice of Pinner’s rich transport heritage preserved in brick and stone.
