Luke Howard (1772-1864) was an English meteorologist and chemist best known for his groundbreaking work in classifying clouds. He is considered the “namer of clouds” for his pioneering efforts in developing a nomenclature system for cloud types that is still used today.

Born in London, Howard was a pharmacist by trade but had a keen interest in meteorology. In 1802, he presented a paper to the Askesian Society titled “On the Modifications of Clouds,” which introduced Latin terms to categorize clouds based on their appearance: cirrus (wispy), cumulus (puffy), and stratus (layered). He later added a fourth category, nimbus (rain-bearing). Howard’s system brought clarity and consistency to the previously haphazard descriptions of clouds.

Howard lived and died at 7 Bruce Grove in Tottenham, a historic house located in the London Borough of Haringey. The borough, situated in North London, has a rich history dating back to medieval times. It was once a rural area known for its mansions and large estates owned by wealthy Londoners. Today, Haringey is a vibrant, multicultural community.

In addition to his work on cloud classification, Howard made significant contributions to urban climate studies. He kept meticulous weather records in the London area, which provided valuable data for understanding the city’s climate. Howard was also a prominent member of the Quaker community and was involved in various philanthropic causes throughout his life.

The blue plaque at 7 Bruce Grove, erected in 2002, commemorates the life and legacy of Luke Howard. His work laid the foundation for modern meteorology and helped people better understand and appreciate the beauty and complexity of the clouds above us.
