Arthur Waley (1889-1966) was a renowned British poet, translator, and Orientalist who made significant contributions to the understanding and appreciation of Chinese and Japanese literature in the Western world. Born Arthur David Schloss, he adopted the surname Waley in 1914. He lived and died at 50 Southwood Lane in the charming Highgate Village area of London’s Borough of Haringey.

Waley’s most notable achievements include his translations of Chinese and Japanese classical texts, which introduced many Western readers to the rich literary traditions of East Asia. His translations of works such as “The Tale of Genji” (a Japanese novel from the 11th century) and “Monkey” (a 16th-century Chinese novel) are still widely read and respected today. Waley’s translations were known for their poetic beauty and ability to capture the essence of the original texts.

In recognition of his contributions to literature and cultural understanding, Waley was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1956 and a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1952. He spent much of his life in the peaceful surroundings of Highgate Village, a historic area known for its literary and artistic residents. The blue plaque commemorating Waley’s life and work was erected in 1995, nearly three decades after his death, serving as a testament to his enduring legacy.
